Project and File Structure
When you start using NaturalReader AI Voice Generator, everything you create is organized into Projects and Files. Think of Projects as folders, and Files as the documents inside them.
There are two types of Projects:
• Your Projects – Private Projects that only you can access.
• Team Projects – If you are on a Team Plan, you can create shared Projects that all team members can access. While everyone can view the content, only one person can edit a File at a time.
When you're working with text and content to convert into audio, these are referred to as "Files". Files are divided into segments of up to 2000 characters each. A single File can have up to 100 segments. When you paste text to create a new File, the text is automatically divided into segments based on line or paragraph breaks. If a paragraph is longer than 2000 characters, it may need to be broken up in the Editor. Segments that exceed the limit will return a convert error, but you don’t need to split them manually at the creation step.
Even if your File contains many segments, you can still download all of the content into a single MP3.
Note: NaturalReader AI Voice Generator (commercial version) does not convert directly from uploaded documents. To create audio, you need to enter the text content directly into a File by typing, pasting, or generating text with Script AI.
Default Content
To help you get started testing voices and features, every account starts with a default private Project called "My First Project". Within that Project is a default File called "Welcome to NaturalReader Commercial". This is what the Library opens to the first time you visit the AI Voice Generator. Otherwise, the Editor opens to the most recent File you worked on.
Since a Project is already set up for you by default, you can begin by adding text and creating new Files, or create and structure a new Project that fits your workflow.
Creating and Managing Projects
Remember, "Files" are the content you're creating while working with text to convert and download into audio. "Projects" are the folders you keep your Files in. Both Projects and Files can be managed from the Library
Select Library from the sidebar menu. This lists all the Files in your current Project.
The Project you're working from is listed above the Files. Click on the Project name (eg. "My Projects") to view all your Projects, including your private and team ones.
From here, you can open, create, edit, or delete Projects. Choose Your Projects or Team Projects to view your private Projects and collaborative Projects respectively.
Select the Sort icon to organize your Projects by name (ascending or descending) or by last edited.
Select a Project from the list, then choose Select Project to open it.
Creating Projects
While viewing your list of Projects, select Your Projects to start a private one or Team Projects to start a Project all your team members can collaborate on.
Select Create New Project.
Enter a name, then select Create to finish or X to cancel.
Renaming Projects
While viewing either Your Projects or Team Projects, select the Project you wish to edit from the list.
Choose the Edit (pen) icon.
Enter a new name. Project names must be unique so you cannot have multiple Projects using the same name.
Select Save to finish or X to cancel.
Deleting Projects
While view either Your Projects or Team Projects, select from the list the Project you wish to delete
Choose the Delete (trash) icon
If you're sure you want to delete the Project permanently, choose Delete Project or click on X to cancel
You can also either create a new Project or edit an existing Project while viewing the Library. Just click on the Options (3 dots) icon next to Library, and select New Project or Edit Projects.
Creating New Files
As we've already covered, Projects are the folders you organize your Files into. Files are where you add and organize the text you want to convert to audio. You can create a new File by typing or pasting in your own text or by generating a script with AI. Remember that the the AI Voice Generator does not convert directly from uploaded documents, so you must enter the text content manually.
Option 1: Text
From the left sidebar, select +Add > Text.
Enter a name for the File.
(Optional) Select a voice template. You can fine-tune content, voices, and playback later in the Editor.
Type or paste your text. The text will be automatically segmented based on line or paragraph breaks. Keep in mind that:
Each segment can contain up to 2000 characters
Your File can have up to 100 segments
Longer segments can be broken down later in the Editor. You don't need to do this during creation.
Even if your text is segmented, you can download all the segments into a single mp3 later.
Select Create New
Option 2: Script AI
From the left sidebar, select +Add > Script AI.
Write a prompt that describes your topic and main points
(Optional) Adjust Settings:
Choose a language.
Select a project type (e.g. eLearning, ad, training).
Adjust the number of paragraphs and tone.
Review the generated script. You can:
• Select Regenerate (icon) for a new draft.
• Select Copy (icon) to copy the text.
• Refine your prompt to narrow results.
When you’re satisfied, select Accept, review again, and edit if needed.
Select Create New.
After creating a File with either method, the Editor opens automatically. Here you can refine your text and playback settings to further prepare it for audio conversion. Editor features (such as voice settings, speed, and downloading audio) are covered in separate articles.
Managing Files
Once a File has been created, you can manage it in the Library. This includes navigating between other Files in the Project, sorting, renaming, duplicating, deleting, exporting, moving Files to another Project, or restoring a previous version.
Navigating Files
We've already covered how to navigate between your Projects. When you select Library from the sidebar menu, it will list all the Files in your opened Project.
Simply click on the File you wish to work on and you can edit its text and settings directly from the Editor panel. You can also click on the « and » icons to hide or unhide the Library's File list panel.
To change how your Files are listed, select the Options (3 dots) icon at the top of the File list panel. You can sort it by name or by last edited, and both either ascending or descending.
Renaming, Duplicating, and Deleting Files
Select Library from the sidebar menu.
If needed, click your Project name to switch to a different Project and edit its Files.
Mouse over the File list and click on the More (3 dots) icon
Choose one of the following actions:
Rename: Change the File name.
Duplicate: Create a copy of the File.
Delete: Permanently remove the File. Do not select this unless you are certain, as it will not ask for confirmation.
You can also delete multiple Files at once.
In the Library's File list panel, select the Options icon (horizontal 3 dots) at the top of that panel
Choose Select
Click on the Files you want deleted, or choose Select all to choose all Files
Select Delete
If you're sure you want to delete the Files, choose Yes to finish or Cancel to exit
Transferring Files Between Projects
You may want to reorganize your Files by moving them to another Project. If you want a File to exist in more than one Project, duplicate it first before transferring. Keep in mind that duplicated Files are independent. If you edit one copy, the changes will not apply to the other.
Select Library from the sidebar menu.
If needed, click your Project name to switch to a different Project and edit its Files.
Mouse over the File you wish to transfer and click on the More (3 dots) icon.
Select Move to another project.
Use the drop-down to select a Project to move it to.
Choose Save to finish the transfer, or Cancel to exit
Restoring File History
Your text and File content are saved automatically every 30 seconds. If you make a mistake or something doesn’t sync properly, you can restore a previous version of the File.
Select Library from the sidebar menu
Mouse over the File and click the More (3 dots) icon
Select Restore History Files
If available, previous versions will be listed under Other File History with timestamps
Mouse over the version you want to restore and click Restore
If a previous version is available, it will open as a new File titled “Copy of [File Name]” so your current version remains unchanged.
Exporting and Importing Project Files
Aside from the shared Team Projects for users on a group subscription, there’s no way to transfer Projects between accounts except for using the export/import function.
You can manually export Files that can be imported by any user to their own account to continue to be worked on.
The AI Voice Generator exports your Files in a unique .nkl file type that can be used in NaturalReader only.
Exporting Single Files
Select Library from the sidebar menu.
Mouse over the File and click the More icon (vertical 3 dots) and choose Save to local file (*.nkl).
Choose a destination and select Save to finish.
Exporting Multiple Files
You can export selected File within a single Project at once.
Select Library from the sidebar menu.
From the Library’s File list panel, click on Options (3 horizontal dots) at the top and choose Select.
Click on the checkboxes to mark which Files to export.
Select the Download icon (*.nkl).
Choose a destination and select Save to finish.
Your Project’s Files will be saved in a folder.
Exporting Full Projects
You can export all Files from a single Project in one step, but Files from different Projects must be exported separately.
Select Library from the sidebar menu.
From the Library’s File list panel, click on Options (3 horizontal dots) at the top and choose Download Project.
Choose a destination and select Save to finish.
Your Project’s Files will be saved in a folder.
Importing Files
Files can be imported one at a time only. You cannot batch import Files. Keep in mind this function is for importing previously exported AI Voice Generator Project Files and is not about uploading text document formats, which the app does not support.
Select +Add from the sidebar menu.
Choose File (.nkl).
Navigate to and select the .nkl File to open.
The File will be imported into the current Project and can be worked on again.
